These individuals have not only integrated consistent movement into their routines but have also reached the pinnacle of their sports.

 

Many began their athletic journeys in their 40s, proving it's never too late to start.

 

They unanimously agree: the key to staying physically fit lies in the mind.

 

Here are the mindset shifts that keep them breaking records, recovering from injuries, and maintaining health as they age.

 

Mark Schmitz, 54: Parent Yourself Like a Toddler

 

Schmitz began running at 40 to support his son in cross country.

 

Initially struggling to reach the end of his driveway, he persisted.

 

By gradually increasing his distance—first to a neighbor's mailbox, then two—he built endurance.

 

Now competing in 5k and 10k road races, Schmitz emphasizes treating oneself with the care given to a toddler.

 

He avoids coffee for breakfast, abstains from smoking and excessive alcohol, maintains a regular sleep schedule, and opts for nutritious meals over fast food.

 

Adopting these habits, he notes, has boosted his energy and overall health.

 

Norma Minkowitz, 87: Don't Think About Your Age

 

Minkowitz, holding the world record for the 1-mile race at NSG, focuses on health rather than age.

 

She maintains a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, and whole grains, complemented by post-exercise protein drinks and evening dark chocolate.

 

After a hamstring injury due to improper training, she became more analytical and patient, learning that more isn't always better.

 

Her motivation? Staying strong to avoid dependence on aids like walkers.

 

Philipp Djang, 69: Think of Exercise Like Brushing Your Teeth

 

Djang, an elite swimmer with numerous backstroke records, exercises daily, viewing it as essential as brushing his teeth.

 

He advises those feeling too old to start: "You're never too old to try.

 

There's always someone faster and someone slower.

 

Don't judge; just enjoy the ride."

 

He emphasizes finding joy in movement and achieving a state of psychological flow, where time slows, and the activity becomes effortless.

 

Vickie Lidell, 69: Believe You Can and You Will

 

Lidell, a mother of ten, began her athletic journey at 63.

 

Competing in sprints and long jump, she recently achieved personal bests in the 200m and 60m events.

 

She believes in getting healthier and stronger with age, refusing to settle for less.

 

Her advice: "Just do it.

 

Start at whatever level you're on."

 

She also underscores the importance of rest, proper nutrition, and enjoying the journey.

 

Mark Woommavovah, 58: Look at Movement as Medicine

 

Woommavovah, a retired Lieutenant Colonel and high school cross country coach, competes in the 5k Road Race, 22k Bike Race, and Triathlon.

 

He ensures daily movement and viewing consistency as the foundation for strength and health.

 

He acknowledges that while age may slow you down, it doesn't have to stop you.

 

Starting biking and swimming in his 40s, he now competes and inspires others, proving it's never too late to invest in your health.

 

Shawn Homan, 62: Optimism is a Necessity for Overcoming Life's Hurdles

 

Homan, a first-time NSG pickleball athlete, began playing to stay healthy.

 

She enjoys the sport's social aspect and its accessibility, making it a family activity.

 

Facing personal health challenges and raising a child with disabilities, she emphasizes the importance of a positive mindset.

 

She believes that staying strong and optimistic is essential for overcoming life's hurdles.

 

These athletes exemplify that a healthy life is attainable at any age.

 

By adopting mindful habits and maintaining a positive outlook, they continue to inspire and redefine aging.
